This year I began studying at the University of Cincinnati. For me, it was a huge change. I did not know anyone here and my roommates were all strangers. At the beginning of the year, I resolved not to be lonely. I went to the rock wall and to the Mountaineering Club (UCMC) and made many friends there. One of the guys at the wall got me into the UC Navigators which is a campus ministry. I had been trying to find community with H2O but I never really got committed there. When I started going to Navs, I found that they were all very open and willing to be like family. I met my mentor and my two best college friends through Navs. The Navs community is extremely welcoming and they make you feel at home, while also growing and challenging you. Classes were very tough. I was not at all used to having to study so it was really good for me to have older friends who had done it before. They gave me advice and encouragement. They also helped me to manage my stress. Being in such a tight and welcoming group has definitely been very good for my college experience, as well as my spiritual life. This year I have been involved in National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT). I do it through Venturing which is through the BSA. NYLT is my way of giving back and contributing to society. It is a program which mentors youth and enables them to have leadership skills and confidence when making plans and communicating with others. With NYLT I am the youth support which is the liaison between the youth and the adults. I am very glad that I have been able to continue NYLT in college and I hope to continue for many years.

In order to prepare for next year, I would advise myself to become more self-disciplined. That is something that I have struggled with this year and I think I will learn more and get better grades when I am more organized and more focused on what I need to be working on. I started in the exploratory program and now that it is the end of the year, I have applied to major in BME. I originally planned to go into engineering, but did not really know which. Through classes, classmates, and an informational interview with Ethicon, I have decided on BME. I am ready to start my definite path towards a successful degree and career. One goal that I have set for the upcoming year is to be more organized and timely with my class assignments.
